The Sapir-Whorf Funnel — How Many Americans Actually Know Language Is Power?

Layer 1: US Adults — 100% (~258 million)

The entire adult population of the United States. Operating almost entirely within the Lockean common sense: words are labels that point at things, and communication is about accuracy. Nothing in standard American education introduces the possibility that language itself shapes what becomes thinkable. Locke (1689): "Words are signs of ideas in the mind, not of things in the world."

Layer 2: College Educated — 36.4% (~94 million)

The hard ceiling of formal philosophical exposure. Only this group could have encountered Saussure, Wittgenstein, or Whorf in any structured academic context — yet most degree programs never touch philosophy of language at all. STEM accounts for 21.6% of bachelor's degrees; business 18.6%. Philosophy is a rounding error. Saussure (1916): "The linguistic sign is arbitrary — the connection between word and thing is purely conventional."

Layer 3: Any Philosophy — ~6% (~15 million)

Estimated proportion who took even one philosophy course. Most encountered analytic philosophy — logic, ethics, epistemology — not philosophy of language. The Whorfian insight is not standard curriculum anywhere in the US K–12 or general education system. Getting here already required a deliberate choice. Wittgenstein (1953): "The limits of my language are the limits of my world."

Layer 4: Philosophy Majors — 0.42% (~7,400 degrees/yr)

Philosophy peaked at 0.51% of all bachelor's degrees in 2006 and has been declining since. In 2025, the drop accelerated sharply. Critically, 66% of US bachelor's-granting institutions award no philosophy degrees at all — just 6% of schools produce the majority of all philosophy graduates, concentrated at elite research universities. Black and Asian students remain significantly underrepresented in the major. Nietzsche (1873): "Truths are illusions which we have forgotten are illusions."

Layer 5: Continental Exposure — ~0.05% (~129,000)

Continental philosophy is a minority current even within philosophy departments, which are overwhelmingly oriented toward analytic traditions in the US. Foucauldian discourse analysis — the idea that language produces rather than reflects reality, and that nominative categories are exercises of power — requires both access to and interest in a specific subdiscipline within an already rare major. Foucault (1969): "Discourse is not simply that which translates struggles; it is the thing for which struggle takes place."

Layer 6: Active Practice — ~0.01% (~25,000)

The genuinely rare group who not only understands the constitutive function of language theoretically, but practices it in real time — actively intervening in nominative choices because of their power effects, without theoretical scaffolding visible in the output. Immigrants, translators, and people who have navigated multiple linguistic worlds are overrepresented here relative to philosophy departments. "Outlier" over "crazy." "Electric brain" over "computer." Description over nomination. Every word is a decision about what to make visible.
